Riot teases Icebox, a new Valorant map
Since the release of Valorant, one of the loudest complaints from the community has been map diversity. Players have voiced their displeasure with everything from under-tuned map rotations in the matchmaking playlist to a seemingly unimaginative corridors and corners style of map design.
With less than a week remaining on Act II, Valorant’s version of competitive seasons, Riot has finally teased a new playground for players to prepare for in Act III. Titled “Enter the Icebox,” the short video doesn’t give away much in terms of actual gameplay on the new map “Icebox” but does include several interesting tidbits that are worth exploring.
Set on what can only be described as an Arctic shipping port, Icebox appears to pit Attackers versus Defenders for control of the cargo loading area and surrounding facilities. Though the video’s establishing shots show actual cargo ships it is unclear whether they are just part of the map’s skybox or whether we will get to play on them similar to Call of Duty’s “Hijacked.”
As the video progresses we get some brief peeks at various paths that players can take through the stacked shipping containers and loading machinery. In addition to vertical ziplines, similar to the one on Split’s B site, there also appears to be at least one horizontal line connecting two elevated windows. Valorant has already broken several of the tactical shooter molds with regards to movement around the maps and appears to be pushing this concept even further with Icebox. The map appears to offer multiple experiences depending on where players move with the indoor portions of the map seeming to follow a bit more of the traditional tac-shooter layout, even giving off a somewhat CS:GO “Office” vibe. The outdoor sections look to be a much more open sandbox with plenty of freedom to move up and over terrain as well as around it.
With Icebox, it appears that Riot is looking to address several of the complaints the community has had about overall map design while simultaneously mixing up the general aesthetic. Be sure to stay tuned for a full walkthrough of the ambitious new addition to Valorant’s map pool when Act three comes out.
